This is my 3rd sequential year shooting the cover for the Law Bulletin’s 40 Under Forty publication. This year I worked with Adam Herjsa of the Law Bulletin to produce the 40 person group photo. The location was Hotel 71 on Wacker Drive, in downtown Chicago. The fig team included Billy Rood, Alicia ?, and myself, Brian Carey, as the man pressing the magic button on the camera.

I found out that this year’s photo was not going to be on the cover, rather a full spread within the publication. So, with that in mind, I organized the group of 40 into 2 separate groups, left and right of the frame. The space between them would then line up with the spine of the final publication.

The key to getting the best group photo is to take your time lining up the shot. Start with the shorter people in front, and the tall people in back. Check for awkward spaces in the group. Make sure that every one is equally visible. When shooting the photo, make sure that you have the group’s full attention, and shoot multiple times in case of blinking.

If you take a closer look at the photo, two of the attorneys were not actually there. I ended up Photoshopping them in later.
